Prepare for College and Career in High School
One of the best ways to prepare for college and a career is to take challenging courses during high school.
The Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development and many of the state’s colleges and universities recommend the following high school course work:
  • English/language arts — 4 units
  • Social studies — 3 units
  • Mathematics — 4 units*
  • Science — 3 units
  • Fine arts — 1 unit
  • Physical education — 1 unit
  • Health education — 0.5 unit
  • Personal finance — 0.5 unit
  • Electives — 7 units**
Be sure to check the specific admissions requirements of colleges you are interested in attending to make sure you earn the credits you need. Meet with your school counselor to make sure you are taking classes that will help you achieve your college and career goals.

Missouri Grants and Scholarships

Missouri offers a number of grants and scholarships, administered by the Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development, to help pay for college.

A+ Scholarship ProgramThe A+ Scholarship provides funds for eligible graduates of A+ designated high schools who attend a participating public community colleges or vocational/technical schools, or certain private two-year vocational/technical schools.

Access Missouri Financial Assistance ProgramAccess Missouri is a need-based program designed to be simple to understand, provide predictable, portable awards, and increase access to a student’s school of choice.

“Bright Flight” Missouri Higher Education Academic Scholarship ProgramThe Bright Flight Scholarship is a merit-based program that encourages top-ranked high school seniors to attend approved Missouri colleges and universities.

Dual Credit / Dual Enrollment ScholarshipBeginning with the fall 2022 semester, high school students may be eligible to receive a scholarship that covers the tuition and fees for their dual credit or dual enrollment courses. To qualify, students must demonstrate financial need and be taking dual credit or dual enrollment courses from a Missouri college or university in addition to meeting the program’s eligibility criteria. Fast Track Workforce Incentive GrantThe Fast Track Workforce Incentive Grant is a new financial aid program beginning with the 2019-20 academic year. It addresses workforce needs by helping adults pursue a certificate, degree, or industry-recognized credential in an area designated as high need.

Advanced Placement Incentive GrantThe Advanced Placement Incentive Grant is a one-time grant designed to encourage high school students to take and score well on Advanced Placement tests in mathematics and science.

Kids’ Chance of Missouri Scholarship ProgramThe Kid’s Chance Scholarship is available to children of workers who were seriously injured or died in a work-related accident covered and compensated by workers’ compensation.

Minority and Underrepresented Environmental Literacy ProgramThe Minority and Underrepresented Environmental Literacy Program is a scholarship designed to assist academically talented minority and under-represented individuals pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in an environmental course of study that will lead to employment in a field that is clearly environmentally related.

Public Service Officer or Employee’s Child Survivor Grant ProgramThe Public Service Officer or Employee’s Child Survivor Grant provides tuition assistance to certain public employees and their families if the employee is killed or permanently and totally disabled in the line of duty.

Wartime Veteran’s Survivors GrantThe Wartime Veteran’s Survivors Grant is available annually to children and spouses of veterans whose deaths or injuries were: a result of combat action or were attributed to an illness that was contracted while serving in combat action, or who became 80 percent disabled as a result of injuries or accidents sustained in combat action since Sept. 11, 2001.
