Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we prepare for the winter season, Miami R-1 would like to remind families about the possibility of using Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) on days when weather conditions make it unsafe to hold school on campus.
Missouri districts may use up to 36 hours of AMI each year. This option allows teaching and learning to continue from home through teachers’ communication tools and prepared learning materials. For Miami R-1, the decision to use an AMI day will be made on a case-by-case basis. Families will be notified through our mass communication system (email/text/call) at the same time a weather-related closure is announced. (Be sure to check your teacherease account to make sure all your information is up to date.)

For the Junior High and High School students: teachers will post instructions and assignments for the day in Google Classroom by 8:00 a.m.
Elementary Students: You should have your AMI packets already, home with you. There will be an announcement on the cancellation day on which packet to use.
Expectations on an AMI Day:
-- JH/ HS students are expected to log into Google Classroom and complete the assigned work for the day.
-- Elementary completion of the day's packet in its entirety.
--Attendance will be based on assignment completion.
--Failure to complete work for a class will result in an unexcused absence for that hour in Teacher Ease.
--Students who are unable to complete work due to illness or lack of internet access will have one school day to make up the assignment and remove the absence. (A doctor’s note will need to be provided to change the absence to excused.)
ALL ATHLETICS and EXTRACURRICULAR activities can be affected by these AMI days, if you do not complete the work on time, it will affect your eligibility!
If your student receives services from our special education department and you have questions about their AMI expectations, please contact Mrs. Youngblood.
We encourage families to reach out with any questions regarding AMI procedures or technology needs. Our hope is that the effective use of AMI days will reduce the need for snow make-up days while maintaining continuity in student learning.

School Closure Notifications
Now is the time to make sure your communication preferences are set to your liking in TeacherEase Parent Portal. We will be using TeacherEase again this year to send out school closure, late start, and early dismissal notifications. Email notifications are automatically set. However, text messages are not automatically set due to FCC Regulations. Follow these steps to recieve text messages.

Opt-in for announcement texts for Parents/Guardians
1. Log into your parent portal.
2. Click on “Miscellaneous” or “more” and then “Communication Preferences-Notifications”.
3. Look for the “Messages from Staff, General Info., Announcements, School Closures, and Other Messages."
4. Set the Text Message settings to “Yes” for the type of messages you’d like to receive. At a minimum, I would encourage you to select “Yes” for all messages related to School Closures. The more you are willing to receive, the more you will be “in the know.” If you do not agree to accept the text messages, you will only receive emails.
5. Be sure to click the “Save” button.

After you have changed preferences, it will allow us to send a welcome text message to you. You will then just need to respond with the word “Start” to be able to receive text messages from Miami R-1.

*You can also update your preferences if you use the TeacherEase app. The app has a red apple sitting next to a yellow pencil (for Apple and Android users). Follow the same steps to receive text messages.
If you need another welcome email sent, please let us know. You can email a request to [email protected] or call the school and let the secretary know you would like to have a login for parent portal. A welcome email will then be sent through our new student information system within a couple business days.

A quick reminder you can check on your child's grades 24/7 on TeacherEase  If you need a login, please call the school at (660) 267-3480.
