Miami R-1 School District Earns a 94.2% on 2015 Annual Performance Report

The Miami R-I School District shows continued improvement on their Annual Performance Report (APR).  Every district in the state is evaluated on the same criteria: Academic Achievement, Subgroup Achievement, College and Career Readiness, Attendance, and Graduation Rate.  The district earned 130 out of a possible 138 points 94.2% on the 2015 APR compared to 119/140 points 85% in 2014, and 110.5/140 points 71.8% in 2013.  This improvement is the result of an increase of student and staff awareness, pride, and desire to become a high achieving school district.  Miami’s score ranks among the highest among schools in the west central area.  The district has seen a significant increase since implementing the 4-day school week.  This could be coincidence or a result of improved attendance and morale among staff and students.  Whatever the case, the students and teachers, all, are very proud of their achievements and accomplishments.

Dr. Seuss STEM Activity
The 1st and 2nd grade combined today to engage in a STEM activity. It was "the cats hat" tower building. Each group was given 10 cups and 10 pieces of paper and without instruction they were supposed to see who could stack the cups the highest. It didn't take them long to start utilizing the paper in between each cup. Then we had a short lesson on gravity and stability and talked about how the paper helps the weight of the cup to be evenly distributed .

5th Grade Science
We've been studying mixtures and solutions this week. We started off with a snack that we decided was a heterogeneous mixture. The students explored different mixtures in a science center and had to determine if it was a solution, colloid, suspension or heterogeneous mixture. We also got to see how you can boil or evaporate a salt water solution and the salt is left behind.  Later we made two solar water distillers, one using salt water and one with muddy water that should produce fresh, drinkable water!

Monsanto Grant Presentation
Miami R-1 has received a $25,000 grant from America's Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. The district will use the money to purchase new science textbooks, accompanying eTexts and various STEM (Science, engineering, technology, and mathematics) tools, including circuit, fossil and gem kits for kindergarten through fifth grade students.
To further expand their impact of the grant, the district is also purchasing textbooks and other science-related classroom necessities for the high school physics classroom. Miami R-1 School District's goal is to
be a model for incorporating technology and raising student achievement.
Farmers who nominated the school district, representatives from the school and the Monsanto Fund and Missouri State House of Representatives member Patricia Pike attended a check presentation to celebrate the grant at the Amsterdam Jubilee on Saturday, September 26th.
